Your first 90 days.

Welcome in — we're so glad you're here. You don't have to do everything at once. Think of this as a gentle path through your first few months, not a checklist to race through. Start at the top, move at your own pace, and skip around if you'd like. This is your community now, and how you show up is up to you.

03 · Our Story & Who Belongs Here

The Collaborative began with listening.

Early childhood leaders of color told us what they were missing — a network of peers, space to rest, room to build power together — and we built this in answer to that.

What we heard you wanted

And what it answers.

Four needs surfaced again and again. The Collaborative is built to meet each one.

Read our full origin story →
  • A network of peers
for shared learning, mentorship, and careinstead of isolation with nowhere to turn.
  • Culturally reverent, equity-centered professional development
rooted in your lived experienceinstead of capacity-building that misses the mark for leaders of color.
  • A platform to stand in collective power
with strength in numbersinstead of a fragmented ecosystem with no shared voice.
  • Time and resources for restoration and healing
because rest is the pointinstead of operating in constant burnout.
Who's a member?

Three things make someone an EC LOC member.

01
You work in early childhood.

Any organization serving children, families, or communities from prenatal through age five.

02
You're a leader.

You hold a leadership role, whether C-suite, program director, or founder.

03
You identify as a leader of color.

Black, Indigenous/Native, and/or a Person of Color.

We don't discriminate on the basis of race. Any individual is welcome to join the Collaborative if they're willing to uphold our guiding principles.
04 · What We Believe

Everything we do comes back to five guiding principles.

  1. 01

A national network organized and led by EC LOC, with EC LOC-directed programming.

  2. 02

We affirm the lived experiences of EC LOC.

  3. 03

We respect and value your time, your burdens, and your responsibilities.

  4. 04

We create value for you, your organization, and the wider early childhood field.

  5. 05

We center liberation as the end goal.

A note on how we're governed

The Collaborative is evolving. We're moving from a structure led by our founding partner, Promise Venture Studio, toward one that is decentralized, self-determined, and fully EC LOC-led. It's a journey we're taking with care, transparency, and trust.

05 · Why We Exist

We're working toward three things for every leader in this community.

P01

Sustainability

So you feel sustained, less isolated, and able to stay in this field.

P02

Social capital

So you build the relationships and networks that move your work forward.

P03

Power

So you can shape the systems that affect the children and families you serve.

The throughline

When leaders feel sustained, connected, and powerful, that strength ripples outward — to their organizations, their communities, and the field as a whole.

06 · What You Can Do

Four programming pathways, each shaped by ideas members brought to us.

P01

Community & Network Building

Connecting with peers across the country.

Full Collaborative virtual gatherings, the annual in-person R.E.S.T. Conference, and locally hosted events you can bring to your own region.

P02

Leadership Growth & Development

Culturally rooted learning and wisdom-sharing.

Fireside chats, communities of practice, and guest coaching.

P03

Healing & Restoration

Because rest is the point, not just the means.

Lunch & Laughs, the Healing & Restoration Fund, and our annual in-person retreat.

P04

Systems Change

Standing in collective power.

The Funder Partnership and Power Building work, plus op-ed and storytelling support.

Where all four pathways meet

R.E.S.T.

Our annual in-person conference — restoration, education, solidarity, transformation. One gathering where community, leadership, healing, and systems change come together.

How to join in

Working groups are still building out formal recruitment processes and term limits. For now, members join by volunteering when an opportunity is announced on Mighty Networks or by email. Keep an eye out — and co-creation sessions are open to the whole Collaborative.
